Wedding day jitters is nothing to take to lightly. With all that goes into planning what you envision to be the perfect day, it requires a great deal of work and a great team.

Her team starts with the wedding planner, the caterer, photographer, video person, makeup/hairstylists to name a few. Yes her beauty team is key for a picture perfect day.
The transformation of a beautiful, blushing bride isn’t the only one who worries about looking her best. Her bridesmaid comes just as important!
Not to be confused by upstaging the bride with too heavy and over the top makeup, but something subtle yet effective and romantic.

Finding the right look for the right skin tone is key. Here we used our lovely Christine whose caramel skin proved to be a perfect canvas for the summer sizzle of a New York beauty preparing for an evening out.
To prep her lovely skin I used rosewater and glycerin to close the pores, then added Makeup Forever Face and Body foundation. For the eyes, I used Smashbox Eyelights eyeshadow combo, to get the golden effect, I used MAC sparkle bronzer and for luscious lips Borghese lips gloss in Apricot….

Winter is almost over; so if you were planning a summer wedding you thought you had just enough time to shed any of the holiday weight that you may have gained, if you live in NYC these past couple of days the weather is teasing us to what may have ahead of us real soon.

Today I had the pleasure of making some stops to check out some of the local spots in the Upper East Side, Melange Salon @ The Peninsula, The Peninsula SPA and Equinox on Lexington Avenue. Wow! Talk about state of the art and relaxing.

It really made me want to start preparing for the summer, shedding some dead winter skin and the extra 10 pounds that I can do without.

I am happy to say that the customer service in all of these places is by far first class. Why else would you spend that kind of money if you have to put up with bad service or/and bad attitude.

Somethings I am getting ready to experience and can't wait to experience are Brazilian Blow out offered at the Melange Salon, Full Body Exfoliation and Facial at The Spa @ The Peninsula, and a exercise session and a swim at Equinox. Lovers Paradise

Love in Paradise!

A week ago, I was in Paradise (aka: Jamaica!)…now, I’m back in NYC with 2 feet of snow. Wow! What a difference a week makes! Last week, Frank and I journeyed to Jamaica to “test-drive” the locations we were interested in...in both Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

We loved the hospitality and generosity we received from the staff at all of the locations – Royal Plantation, Half Moon and Round Hill. The wonderful thing about Jamaica is its blend of old-world luxury with timeless glamour to make every experience special and memorable. After our week-long visit, we were certain that choosing Jamaica to host our wedding weekend was the perfect choice.
Each resorts’ offering was very compelling, and they treated us like kings and queens of the Universe! But in the end, we chose Round Hill (in Montego Bay) because:

It’s centrally located – it’s only 20 minutes from the airport.
Guests can easily and quickly be transported to a horseback trek, adventure sports course or a leisurely day of golf – the staff will arrange everything!
On site, the beachfront location offers all of our guests an oceanfront view as each hotel suite is steps away from the beach.
The villas – 4, 5 and 6-bedroom options - are ideal for an intimate gathering and to begin the tradition of an inter-family vacation.
The resort is like a slice of heaven – from the drinks (with rum, of course!), the food, the grounds and the interiors designed by Ralph Lauren (who owns a villa on-site) – we were overwhelmed with its beauty.
World-class spa where Frank and I enjoyed a 90 minute couples massage that rivals any that we’ve had in at some of the best spas in NYC. Need we say more?

Finally, although we’re not having children in our ceremony, we’ve quickly grown to love the idea of having little ones join us for the weekend. There’s something about hearing those little voices discovering the sand, beach and water for the first time that we love. Round Hill has the Pineapple Kids’ Club – complimentary – for kids 3 to12 years old. It’s like camp for children where they could possible make friends for life.

So, quickly we booked our date and put a deposit down on Round Hill for October 9th, 2010 (with 10.10.10 being in high demand, we needed to move quickly:)
It’s so surreal, everything is coming together and I’m really excited that at the end of the year we’ve completed the ‘save-the-dates’ and invitations. They are both being printed and we should receive the final save-the-dates right after the holidays!!!

As 2009 comes to a close, I start to realize that this time next year, I’ll be Mrs. Frank Altimare, III. WOW! I am so in love with Frank and excited to begin this next chapter of our life together. And, I realize that I’m very lucky (even though it can be a little stressful at times!) that he’s 100% involved in this planning process. It’s our first real project that helps me to know that as we move throughout life, our understanding of partnership will, hopefully, allow us to succeed as we collaborate as parents and spouses.

Say “YES” to the Dress!

Well, there’s no turning back now. I have picked and purchased my dress. Yes, perhaps only the deposit (which was in itself the most money I’ve ever paid for a piece of clothing)…but, I’m not committed to not only Frank – but this beautiful garment. LOL!!!

Knowing that Frank is reading my posts - and also some of guests, and wanting to keep the actual dress a surprise, I will only say that the weekend with my mom, new MIL, SIL and MOH made me realize that this Manhattan hasn’t made me that “hard”. Although I’m DEFINITELY not a princess, ball-gown girl…the beautiful softness that I loved as a little girl in Chattanooga, TN is still there. THANK GOODNESS!

Every day, I, along with my fashionable and stylish New York women, put on my “armor” of black, chic solid and crisp, tailored cuts to go out and conquer this city. I was certain that I would pick an equally suited wedding gown – just in white. Ha, ha, ha!

And I did try – believe me… I loved trying on gowns from Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Pronovias, and Monique Lhuillier …but, I was pleasantly shocked to pick a dress that is a little more “girly”, softer and more “demure” than I had originally thought I’d like. Wow…everyday, I grow more and more …I’m surprising myself.

It was a great weekend, good for family and friends to get together, spend time chatting and learning about each other. They will be our new family – so having their support means a lot to both of us!

Today's modern bride shares the same dreams and desires as the brides of the Victorian era. The Victorian era made quite an impression on modern brides because they are fascinated with Victorian attire like veils, shoes, jewelry, and the wedding dresses.During the 1880's, marriage was a great event for the brides.A day her mother prepared when she was born. Families have their own traditions they follow and other families create their own traditions. For instance, some brides wore Victorian rose, pink, blue, green, and creme colored accessories. A simple Victorian style wedding dresses had a fitted bodice for a small waist and a full skirt. One seventeen year old wore a pink and blue wedding dress and shoes to compliment her dress as well.

Since there wasn't a wide range of shoes to choose from during this time. In 1863, the new Victorian Wedding Boot was available to all brides. The Victorian Wedding Boot is a pale yellow ankle length boot decorated with pink calialilies and the floral design on the wedding boot has been compared to a sweet country garden. The popularity of the Victorian Wedding was exceptional because of the style and feminine look. Brides had to special order the wedding boot in advance before their weddings. There were a few other wedding boots, but they couldn't compare to the Victorian Wedding Boot. Today, the Victorian Wedding Boot is a bride's favorite. There have been many requests for the boot in the last few years. Eve Cooper is a white thirty three year old first bride who plans to have a Victorian wedding. She has made special arrangements with a Victorian themed wedding shop in Virginia.

The Victorian Wedding Boot was designed by a woman named Sara who lived in the Old West. When she got married, she searched for a shoe to match her wedding attire. To her disappoint, she found dull and unattractive wedding boots. She decided to make her own wedding boot and for future brides who wanted a pretty wedding boot. At her wedding, Sara wore the Victorian Wedding Boot and the women guests were interested in the boot. When she came back from her honeymoon, Sara made a few Victorian Wedding boots for her friends. Then the Victorian Wedding Boot was a big hit, the new bride opened her own wedding shop in the Old West. The wedding shop stayed open for twenty years and Sara opened two more wedding shops in nearby towns.Today, the Victorian Wedding Boot can be found on the internet and special ordered for brides of the 21th century.

The economy has definitely scared many to hold on tight to their purse. But when love calls no economic crisis will hold it back.

The key to successfully making this work is not by holding off the wedding its by doing your homework and approaching your wedding plans like you would with any serious venture. Careful planning.

We had the pleasure of traveling cross country to see what America has to offer and we met with some of the most amazing people. From fashion tips from White Chicago one of our favorite stores. This amazing fashion house is very conscience of the hard economic times of the women in that are planning their nuptials. This chic, modern approach to dress shopping is brilliant. The dresses retailed at the store are either new, nearly new, sample dresses of the most sought after designer. They are handled with care by the sales consultants to the brides that come in to the boutique who are required to take off their shows and wash their hands while handling the dresses. The dresses although may have been pre-owned show no trace of it. We love this amazing approach for the budget bride.

Then we went to a St. Louis, quite charming I have to add. The hospitality of the people was definitely felt. I had the pleasure of visiting one of its most amazing vineyards to the the Four Seasons Hotel, the view was amazing from the roof top. From the spa services offered were priceless. The ambiance, state of the art equipment.

We took a stop to grab a bit to eat at the Queen of Sheeba restaurant. This charming spot serving authentic Ethiopian cuisine truly captured my heart and stomach. As we chatted with its owners on politics, culture I found out how great food brings great conversation. This establishment not only offers private events in their space and musical entertainment for your guests enjoyment. So keep your guest well feed.

Back to New York we discovered Shobha, the most amazing brow threading spot, that offered authentic Indian technique in taking care of your hair removal needs. With three locations in the New York area they are fully equipped to host events for your bridal party.

So there you have it. Shop wisely but enjoy the moment.

Beauty, Beauty, and more beauty.

This has have to been one of the most fun event we hosted for a bride. Our Bride Joy Allen and her maid of honor Sonia Figueroa who is also a bride to be celebrate the new role they will be playing as brides.

We had the honor of having it at one of our favorite spots Dex New York, mineral makeup and studio space. Felicia Walker Benson one of our beauty experts was on post giving makeup tips along with the Dex expert team.

New comer Nicole Jones, graced us with her presence by giving hair tips to the bride and her guests.

Holly Slayton of Artikal, brought some of her chic and round table discussion pieces for people try on. Amazing.

Jane Wilson Marquis, display some of her best pieces to make you want to walk down the aisle.

It’s really happening…

Yes, I’m really getting married.

This little piece of realization happened last week when Frank and I started to write the checks to confirm our stationary order for our lovely invitations. THEN, we spent the Saturday with our photographer taking our engagement photos. This was the truest moment – we are starting this path of partnership that will last a lifetime. It was an amazing day. Our photographer, Robert Munroe (munroephotography.com) is THE best – a great soul and wonderful company. We started in our apartment – on the roof, indoors on the stairs and in front on our brownstone’s stairs. Then, walking around our lovely neighborhood – Chelsea (NYC) – we took advantage of the natural beauty of the city.

Again, I cannot reiterate the importance of choosing the best vendors – we have the best photographer! He’ll be joining us in Jamaica (thank goodness!) where I know he’ll capture the passion, love and excitement of the 3-day celebration.

Well, that’s all for now…next week the moms meet in NYC for the first time to help me with the wedding gown selection! Stay tuned….I’m sure there’ll be some juicy gossip to report.

Say "Oui" In Paris

Paris is said to be the most romantic city in the world. The Eiffel Tower, Arc De Triomphe, Ile de la Cite- Tours de Notre-Dame, Pantheon, Chateau de Vincennes are among the must do when you are in Paris.

But what is Paris with out shopping. Louis Vuitton, Celine, Elie Saab, Cartier and Arab Oud are just the few must stop shops when in Paris.

But when planning your wedding or we went to a couple of quaint neighborhoods to see what they had to offer as far as weddings. We loved the Port de Clichy area and was able to scout the neighborhood and found some amazing locals.

Paris is definitely a city of romance and beauty when you have someone to share it with. All that food and wine is definitely and afrodisiac.

Planning The Big Day

And the planning continues…

In beautiful NYC, it has been a VERY exciting week where we’re inundated with visitors from all over the “Fashion Universe”. With restaurant reservations hard to come by and taxi cabs even harder …I have had a lot of time to plan, plan, plan.

And….can you believe it….my lovely fiancé, Frank, has even been hit by the excitement. Initially, we had an agreement of the 3 choice rule (remember my first blog?), but now he’s so excited that he’s started to conduct his own research and emails me interesting ideas or information. I’m not sure how much longer this will continue, but I’m going to appreciate the help while I have it. Any day, I’m sure, I’ll hear “Ok, I’m done…let’s just go back to the 3 choice agreement.” LOL!!!

I’ve made BIG strides over the last couple of weeks:

* Conference Calls with 2 of the 3 resorts that we’re considering. The choice is becoming clearer on what will work for our friends and family. But, we’ll know FOR SURE after our December site visit.
* Met with our website design team – they are AWESOME. A great friend of mine, Troy Benton, owns The Reindeer Company. They are an industry leading, strategically-grounded digital agency with great creative acumen. Although Reindeer is well known for their work on such brands as, goop.com, Patron and Sobe Life Water… as a generous wedding gift, he offered to complete our website. I am truly blessed to have such great friends!! So, last Friday, we met with two of his designers – Yuyu and Fan – who instantly understood our aesthetic, personalities and goal for the site. We agreed on timing, I supplied the assets and in January – look for our site to launch. REMINDER: Secure our domain name ASAP!!!
* Finalized our kick-off design meeting for our stationary suite – can’t wait to share with you where we net out. We know that Mimi’s going to do a fantastic job!

On Sunday, I went to the most amazing event for all brides. It was organized by the owner of Private Receptions, Nerissa Montemurro (privatereceiptions.com). Amazing is an understatement. For me, it reinforced all the information I’d gathered on my own, my organization method and provided an outlet for me discuss some key concerns with professionals within the industry. Funny…they all agreed…WORK WITH VENDORS WHO YOU LIKE AND WHO LIKE YOU! Seems simple and easy enough, but I’ve noticed that there are “not so nice” people in this industry who often come “highly recommended”. Just because you’re the “it” florist doesn’t mean that you’re right for me. I walked out of the Private Reception event feeling grateful for the vendors we’ve already selected and vowed to follow my gut instinct and only work with ‘nice people’. 30 days until I am MRS. TEEMS!!!!!

Today is officially the 1 month mark until I am a married woman!!! I cannot believe that this time has gone by sooo fast!!!! Lately people have been asking me if I am ready to be married or if I am nervous? Of course I am ready to be married!! I knew Rickey was going to be my husband after our first date. Nervous? Heck no!!!

The next 25 days is grind time!! I need to REALLY start watching what I eat & REALLY start toning up so I can be bikini ready!!! Workout progress updates soon!

Party Like a Rock Star- The Honey Mooners

My bridal shower was a success!! They did a good job of making my vision come to life. The white table cloths, zebra print table runners, paper lanterns hanging from the awning...everything!!!

Everyone had on their white outfits!!! I was soooo happy, you know how some people just cannot follow instructions? :O) One of my friends almost didn't show up because she didn't have a white outfit. I just assumed that everyone had a least one white outfit, but I was totally wrong. Anyhoo I told her that I had some white clothes and told her to come over to try them on to see what fits. Needless to say she found something to wear. After she found an outfit I told her that she is one of my dear friends and I would have found something for her to wear one way or another. :O)

My sister & friend Kowana made sure that I didn't have to do a single thing. It was pretty hard for me not to do anything but I tried to relax. Almost everyone who RSVP'd came...2 people out of the 47 people didn't show up...I found out later that one of my co-workers was helping a friend evacuate from one of the many deadly wild fires that we are having in Los Angeles. Even Rickey's auntie & cousin came and they live almost 3 hours away; so I was pretty excited about that.

Let's see what else....the games were awesome. We had a bridal scavenger hunt with all sorts of items from tame (like bride and groom cake toppers and picture frames) to risque (like condoms, and libido pills) and we even had create a pair of panties for my wedding night. EVERYONE participated & had a ball!!! Some people even took it a step further and added a matching bra. I LOVED IT!!

Instead of having a winner for each game, the guests were given "money" and they had to auction for their prizes. You should have seen them!!! They were acting like they were going to get a car or something. Now some of the prizes that my guests were auctioning for were gag gifts, like a box of hemorrhoid cream and wipes and Summer's Eve feminine wash. It was too funny!!!

Hmmmmm...the food was awesome!!! and the sangria was the boooommmbbbb!!!!

Just Try It

What to do in these early stages???? Try EVERYTHING!

So, this week…I enjoyed a great dinner with friends who were so excited to hear the news of my recent engagement. Lesson for all new brides: it’s great to tell people in small groups…you’ll never grow tired of telling the proposal story and the smaller groups provide a more intimate setting where you can really savor the well-wishes of your friends.

After a great dinner, I made a couple more appointments with bridal ateliers to try and find a gown. I’m even more confused than last week. I’m a very fashion-forward gal, some would say the “African American Carrie“ (from SITC, you know!)…but, I really want to feel like a bride on my wedding. Although I’m not a ball gown sort-of-girl, I’ve realized that I don’t want just any dress to where. So, in preparation for the October visit – where my mom, future MIL, MOH and future SIL will join me in NYC to make the final selection – I tried on a couple more selections. The October visit should be eventful, since it will be the first time the mothers meet. Frankie’s SOOOO excited that he doesn’t have to spend the day with us! Lol!!!

Again, the best tip I heard along the way…the initial fittings should be done alone. Really, you know what you like – and if you confuse yourself, you only have you to reason with! : )

Invitations

How lucky are we to have found an amazing designer who has an aesthetic similar to our own. Mimi Woo, the owner of mika78 (mika78.com), has such great collections to select from – we were overwhelmed. We’ve settled on the bespoke process – where she’ll design our stationary/invitations based on our personality, our destination and the theme of our wedding…how amazing!!

Engagement Photos

So, I’ve found – I think, meeting with him tomorrow – the photographer to do all of our photos! From sopp to nuts: Engagement photo session, wedding weekend and newlywed photos. His online portfolio is perfection. A little caveat about our photos: Frankie and I have NEVER had professional photos completed as a couple. So, we both decided that we want our engagement photos to be well produced – a stylist, make-up artist, hairstylist, professional photographer. It’s a huge production – not recommended for the light at heart!!! We want a combination of in-studio and environmental shots. Hopefully this photographer is up to the challenge…lol!!!!

Now, my words of wisdom (even though I’m only a month into this planning process)…there is a disappointing side of wedding planning that NOONE tells you. Two things you should do immediately! 1. Create a budget. 2. Set expectations early of those you choose to help you in this process. Your wedding is MOST important to you, not to anyone else…not even your BFF! So, just because you’ve discovered the loveliest shade of purple that you think you want to weave throughout all your stationary – tell the designer designing your invitation. She cares…your BFF is just trying to get through the day with all her own activities that she cannot feign excitement once again about the "lovely shade of the day”…especially if she’s married with a teething infant and cranky 2-year old OR if she a high-powered executive on the edge of reason and working to secure her job in this ‘tanking economy’.

Thank goodness I learned these lessons sooner rather than later…whew!

The Honeymooners- Chineye and Rickey In the Begining

How it all started...

I don't think I shared how we met & how Rickey proposed to me:

How we met:
On a cool Saturday evening in September of 2004, Angel Teems (Rickey's sister) decided to celebrate her 26th birthday at the Grand Lux Café in Los Angeles...Beverly Center. Me & Rickey had actually exchanged greetings the year prior at Angel's 25th birthday, but cupid must have taken the night off then. This time around, however, fate turned in a new direction. While sitting next to each other, the two engaged in conversation throughout the night, with Rickey (then a Psychology major) promising to help me pass her CSET tests which were mandatory for her teaching career path. After a couple of weeks, communication between the two escalated from dealing with test anxiety to a first date at Poncho's in Manhattan Beach, and soon we were spending countless hours together. When it was all said and done, I had not only overcome the CSET passing obstacle, but had also overcome the challenge of finding Mr. Right!

The day of the proposal...2/22/08

I am a 7th grade science teacher in Los Angeles and I was reading to my students while they were working on a science poster and my principal and my mentor (who is like a second mother to me) come in through the back door (I have 3 doors - 2 in the front & 1 in the back) and I was surprised because the principal doesn't come to my room that often. She tells me that they are going to do a backpack search because there may be a weapon in my classroom...I was like oh heck no!...and I look at my mentor and she nods her head like just go.
So I go with her and she tells me that she pulled me out because it is very hard to see one of your students getting arrested...blahblahblah. So we were outside for 7 minutes and then the assistant principal (who was my 7th grade teacher and high school counselor) comes outside all upset telling me that they need me to come inside because the students aren't cooperating...now my students know that I don't play when it comes to respecting adults and to hear that they weren't cooperating I was getting ready to GO OFF on them.

So I go into my classroom and it's all quiet and I see Mr. Green (he works in the title 1 office and is the bomb!!!) with a camera...i'm like "hey greenie green" but confused because why is he here with the camera? is he here to take pictures of the weapon?...i was like whatever let me set my students straight because they WERE NOT going to embarrass me!!! Mrs. Miller says "bring him in!!!"...and here comes Rickey!!! & all my students say "SURPRISE!!!" and they are all holding 1 rose.

So already I am super surprised!!! then Rickey comes over to me and gives me 1 rose...i'm just cheesing away!!! So all of a sudden he says how he loves me and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and THEN gets down on one knee...the look in his eyes said that he loves me soooo much...and asks me to be his wife!!! I say "YES!!" and give him the biggest hug ever!!!

So all of my students give me their rose and a hug then say "Congrats Ms. H." I felt sooo special!!! I couldn't breathe!!!
Rickey is in the front of the room with plastic champagne glasses and sparkling cider and preparing for a toast. I was soooo happy!!! I couldn't stay still and I had the biggest smile on my face!!!

He says his toast, everyone was happy...my principal, assistant principal, and mentor were crying...and that's my proposal.

No Pain No Gain

I am in soooooo much pain right now!!!! I haven't been to the gym in 4 weeks & there are 46 more days until we get married so I need to get back in workout mode. Since we are getting married away and I am going to be wearing almost nothing for our honeymoon, I need to get my legs TIGHT & RIGHT!

So this past Saturday me and my FH decided to go to the gym together and boy did he work me out!!!! My legs are in sooooo much pain!!! I knew I was going to be sore, but damn! It hurts when I walk, sit down, sleep, and even when I use the bathroom. Don't even get me started about how much pain I am when I walk down a flight of stairs or when I get up from sitting in one spot too long!!!

I went online to search for a few rememdies and I saw that I had DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness. DOMS usually occurs 24 to 48 hours after an activity and typically lasts about 24 to 48 hours. Since it can be an uncomfortable 24 to 48 hours, here are a few ways for keeping the soreness under control:

* Progress slowly, don't overdo it.
* Warm up and cool down.
* Stretch daily, especially after exercising.
* Ice the sore area for 15 to 20 minutes/day.
* Hit the hot tub or bathtub.
* Take anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen).
* Massage sore muscle or roll it out.
* Avoid strenuous activity.

Hello World Bride Magazine…fellow brides, soon-to-be-brides and those who love this crazy time of wedding planning!!! We are the “soon to be” Altimare’s. I’m Joy and he’s Frank (or Frankie, as I/his family call him). You’ll get to know us – and let me warn you, we are a little crazy! Crazy in love? Yes! And, just plain crazy : )

So welcome and join us on our journey as we plan this amazing celebration of our love for each other.

The Proposal

What a loving and thoughtful man I’m marrying? As planned, Frankie and I set out on our annual summer vacation. This time, Frankie planned the entire event – we journeyed to the West Coast. A tour of all the national parks – Grand Canyon, Bryce, Arches, Monument Valley, 4 Corners, Lake Powell and Zion. It was a very ACTIVE trip, to say the least. Define active: every day, we hiked (at least 3 miles as day) and swam – which put us to sleep by 10pm. On average, we fall asleep in NYC never before 12am, so this trip WORE US OUT!!

Active and eventful – at the foot of Delicate Arch (in Arches National Park), Frankie dropped to one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. It was an amazingly overwhelming moment…one that connected us, spiritually, from that very instant.

We continued our journey back to NYC to tell all our friends and family – starting this crazy whirlwind of planning the biggest party of our lives.

The first week of planning….dresses, dates and destinations!

Immediately returning from vacation, we were able to pop down to Philadelphia (Frankie’s hometown) to tell his family in-person. Turning into an impromptu engagement celebration, friends and family gathered at his parents to hear about the proposal . It was lots of fun – foreshadowing the INSANITY that is sure to exist at my reception!!!

Once I was able to catch my breath, I realized that although we want a very simple, classic, chic wedding – since we are planning a destination wedding, we – translation, I – have a lot to do! O-M-G!?!?!? Can I at least enjoy a moment to be engaged? I mean, I AM a 31 year old woman (uh-hum!), successful and focused. But, I’m from the South (Tennessee), so it could be safe to assume that I, along with my mother, grandmother, aunt, (girl) cousins and friends (since birth) have been waiting for this moment for…30 years! So, five minutes to take it all in was all I was asking.

No way, no how!

All the questions: “Do you have a date?, Where? Who’s going to be in the wedding? “ began to become the topic of every conversation that I had in the first couple of days of returning to NYC. “I have NO idea” is what I wanted to scream – although, I secretly had most the details decided in my head. Just needed to make sure (translation: convince) Frankie that he wanted the same thing.

Luckily, we came to a compromise. I will do the research (me and my small army of girlfriends who had all been recruited to ‘get this wedding in order’) and share with him the top 3 options. This will ensure that I love whatever choice we decide on …lessening (we hope!!) any arguments. I’m sure we’ll laugh about this ‘plan’ later when we’re in the middle of an argument over…flowers! LOL!!!

So, what have I done thus far?

1. Created the guest list – already far over the 30 -50 people that we want. Trim, trim, trim…but, how?
2. Picked two dates (mid-late September 2010) for the wedding.
3. Picked the location for the wedding (Jamaica) and honeymoon (Italy). A nod to both of our heritages.
4. Picked the wedding party – contacted them and they said “yes”…thank goodness!
5. Created my own personal ‘task-force’ of professionals and experts to help me figure out where I need to focus.
6. Picked up a planning guide for destination weddings – NOT HELPFUL…it’s all generic common sense, so…
7. Hired a travel coordinator who specializes in destination weddings. This is the best idea. She knows all the locations, can suggest the best venues and resorts and negotiate the best prices for airfare and hotel. She’ll also help me by being the #1 contact for all my guests – both, the needy and self sufficient – and their travel needs. I LOVE her already!
8. Tried on dresses. I thought it would be better to go by myself for a pre-fitting to my favorite designer – Carolina Herrera. I mean, I know what I like. I thought that it would be better for me to go, try on a few, maybe decide on the silhouette, fabrics, etc. It was the MOST FUN!!! No one to tell me what they “think I should wear or what they wore at their wedding!” to influence my decision. Before leaving, I picked a date to bring my mother, future MIL and MOH to make the final decision (and appease everyone!).

Whew! I’ve been a busy bee… I deserve a glass of wine. Which I’ll go enjoy now and speak with you next week. Who knows what adventures I’ll have to share!

We are please to introduce our newest bride Joy Allen. This Fragile flower has been a friend of World Bride Magazine for sometime now. She did us the honor of traveling with us to the celebration of honor Daniel Wilcox for our first Man of Honor celebration.

This amazing woman is striking in every way. Besides having a successful career in advertising she still makes time to support women with small businesses by sharing her resources.

We met her today for a late lunch to find out the dish on her amazing engagement, the proposal,and the wedding plans.

Details, Details... Honeymooners Saga Continues

OMG Today marks the 2 month mark until our wedding!!! It seems like just yesterday was the 6 month mark until our wedding....man does time fly!!

Well, well, well...what do we have done?

We have our vendor & we've seen a sample of the invite. Now we just have to get the wording for our blessing ceremony approved by our pastor, then send it to our vendor then we are in BUSINESS!

It comes with our package, but we need to let the caterer know how we want it. When we arrive in the DR we will see pictures & they will let them know

* Welcome bags
I know I should pack light, but I think welcome bags would be a nice way of saying thank you to our guests

* Hair & Make-up
My mom can do my make-up I just need to ask her & as far as my hair is concerned I have NO idea! I've heard the Dominicans can do hair well, but I'm not sure I want to risk it.

* Flowers
I know in our package we get a bridal bouquet & bout for the groom, but I need to see how many other bouquets come in our package.

* Paperwork
We are still unsure of what paperwork we are supposed to have translated. We are supposed to be getting married before we head out, so we need to talk to someone about that. I keep trying to tell our wedding coordinator that we are doing all the paperwork in the States, but I don't think she fully understands what I am saying. AAAuUUUGGG!!! That's a whole other story

I'm on the lookout for Zebra Print Paper Lanterns!!!

The bridal shower is literally around the corner (August 30th) & I am rethinking the tissue paper pom-poms decoration idea. Although I love the way the tissue paper pom-poms look, but for convenience purposes I like the paper lanterns. The problem that I ran across is that Cost Plus World Market is the only place that sells zebra print paper lanterns & 1 seller on Ebay that lives in HONG KONG!!! The zebra lanterns at Cost Plus cost $6.99 each and I would need 10 of them...that's 70 freakin dollars!!! I would still need turquoise lanterns and that might be another $70. Jeesh decorations can add up!! My sister (which is the Maid of Honor) & I are supposed to go the China Town in a couple of days to see what they may have to offer. I mean it is China Town right so we should be able to find some bargains.

Now I can go with my original plan with making the tissue paper pom-poms and that will cost about $60 total. That is half of what I would pay for the paper lanterns, but it would be so much more convenient to have the lanterns (which I can use again)! Okay so say I go with the tissue paper pom-poms....I'm a little anal when it comes to art projects and what if the girls cut them wrong or some look good while others look bleh (Martha Stewart makes things look so easy). What do I do then? I know I probably over thinking this whole process, but I want this to be a totally fabulous event (I mean who wouldn't)

The sight of a well dressed man is a sight to behold. Style can be a tricky thing, how do you say?

You can look at a man and see a look just doesn't work, now that can mean a couple of things. One, he has a bad sense of style or fashion. Buy pieces that are multi-purpose. Things you can wear over again and mix and match.

Don't be afraid of color.

If you are unsure about a look don't be afraid to go to your favorite stores and ask the sales person, or personal shopper.

The week before we are getting married we are having our pastor bless our marriage. We decided to do this since our pastor won't be able to marry us and most of our family & friends will not be attending our wedding, we thought this was a good idea for them to be a part of our special day. Now having this blessing ceremony isn't a substitute for our wedding, but the best way I can describe it is like a Christening of our marriage. We both felt it was important to have our pastors blessing.

Another reason why we are doing a ceremony before we go away is so of the hassles people have told us about getting married away. Hassles such as getting paperwork translated, paperwork getting lost, and what we read on brides.com:

So this brings me to the title of my post...I found the dress I will be wearing to our blessing ceremony!!! Since this isn't our actual wedding (you know with us exchanging our personal vows, wedding party, etc) I felt that wearing an actual wedding dress wouldn't be necessary but I still wanted to have the bride feeling. Sooo I have been searching & searching for a beautiful & practical (inexpensive...this one cost $100) white or ivory dress to wear. Since it will be at our church I'm thinking about wearing a cute little shrug or cardigan to wear with it. Now that I have found my dress I need the perfect shoe...you know something that can be worn again. I like the shoes the model has on so I may look for something like that.

The Honeymooners- Chineye and Rickey

This Weekend at the BET Awards festivities we had the pleasure of meeting this amazing couple that I will call "The Honeymooner", their sense of humor is not only contagious but down right outrageous.

I know traditionally the bridal party is responsible for this, but I like to party plan. I am also involved in the planning process since our wedding has gotten moved to the DR I don't have that much to plan anymore & I miss the planning. My sister who is the MOH said that once I told her we were changing that she knew I would be doing that. So needless to say I am back in the planning mode.

Now I am not planning the entire thing, but the decorations are my responsibility. The games, food (even though I did tell them what I would like to eat...which will be mexican food), and prizes are left up to the girls. Since the girls have a bridal fund they will go out and get the decorations based on my ideas. We are all good at budgeting & I still love DIY projects so I will be looking for those types of decorations.

Soooo the theme will be an all white party with splashes of zebra print and turquoise!! We will be asking the guests to wear white & I will wear a turquoise!!!
Here are some of the ideas that I just fell in love with: tissue paper pompoms in zebra print & turquiose, zebra print table runner, carnation ball centerpieces, instead of circle tables using rectangular tables....I can't wait to start doing a trial run of all my ideas!!!

With the help of classic supermodel Iman, makeup artist Sam Fine launched his new instructional makeup application DVD The Basics of Beauty at the Plaza Hotel's Warren-Tricomi salon in New York City. Vanessa Williams, fellow makeup artist AJ Crimson, talk show host Wendy Williams, RuPaul, and a host of gorgeous models packed the chic salon on Thursday night, and it was definitely an event to be envied. Nuvo liqueur, a co-sponsor for the DVD launch party, kept pink drinks aflow and spirits alive.

Moving to a new place is never really easy for us women. Aside from finding a new place and restaurants, we have to find spas, hair salons, and many other things to keep us entertained. I’ve been living in Brooklyn, NY for only three weeks and I have found the most amazing place for beauty and fun.

Hawa is a cosmetic boutique owned by Hawa A. and J. Alexander Martin. Walking home one day I found Hawa cosmetics. What captured my attention was the beauty and colors of the salon. It wasn’t until I was invited in by Ms. Hawa A. that I felt this could be a beauty “home” for me.

Tuesday ended on a relaxing note with a cocktail hour, courtesy of UPTOWN Magazine, in the Phyto Universe spa and salon in New York City. There's nothing like a massage after a long day, and though there weren't treatments available to quite round out the complete spa experience, the social gathering was the perfect way to start the week.

Attendees had the chance to sip champagne, nibble hors d'ouvres, and chat in the salon, which offers one of the best hair treatments you've probably never had. Though a bit pricey, the salon offers hair analysis and specialized treatments for literally every head of hair, including a deliciously exclusive relaxer that doesn't use harsh chemicals that create extra wear and tear on your strands. Guests also had the chance to buy jewelry and find out about the latest in spa treatments and what's hot in entertainment right now. Doesn't that sound so much better than going home to a TV dinner and a bottle of beer?

Lates Drama:

So we’ve been hearing a lot about Thailand’s rioting in the news lately and I really don’t want to be kidnapped and ransomed by some angry Thai person who wants a change in government. Especially since my folks may get the call and just hang up. Not that they don’t love me but who told my dumb ass to Thailand knowing they were running through the streets acting crazy?

The Solution:
Avoid Bangkok. We are in the process of re-routing our flights to Phuket, Phi Phi Island and Chang Mai. Hopefully the folks in the southern part of the country are chillaxin’ on that riot BS.

Four weeks from my wedding. What’s left to do?

* Comb through my RSVPs and invite folks on the short-list. Guest list is 150 so EVERYONE can’t come! But some folks made the short list J.

* Walk through the space with designer extraordinaire Tammy Polatsek and decide where the flowers and draping will go.
* Meet with the photographers.
* Figure out the timeline for the whole weekend.
* Finish my guest favors (home oil reed diffusers).
* Figure out what I’m doing with my hair.
* Meet with the DJ and talk about music
* Figure out what my mom is wearing (color scheme is Black so how hard could that be?)
* Book the bridal suite for the weekend

In Sickness and In Health

Those are the words that is uttered by couples that are married. And I often wonder how many really take the time to examine those words seriously. Do they stop and think about the meaning and the impact it has on a marriage when a mate is sick. Health care around the world is extremely expensive. A price is being put on the lives of human health and for some it costs are more then they can afford and the debt is far more then society is willing to pay.

What steps can be taken to prevent this dilemma? Proper diet, exercise and regular check ups. But that is easier said then done. For me I know that getting out of bed is a struggle enough, from one meeting to the next. So to find the time to join a gym, exercise is more time than I can spare. But is the loss of my health worth the price I will pay for not making the time to do some form of exercise even if it is once a week? No. So I decide to start taking kick boxing classes in my neighborhood in Brooklyn. This quaint establishment ran by a group of wonderful locals is amazing. All sorts of people from various sorts of professional background congregate on Sundays here to take this energetic class. Both men and women. It was great. I stretched every part of my body. I felt pain in parts I couldn't image. One thing is for sure, I know I can't blame my lack of desired weight on my son, 13 years is far to long for me to say its a the baby roll. Nope won't work.

So I have committed to do something about it for the next coming months. I will start slow. I have committed 1 hour once a week to attend this class which should hold me until the next session. By the time I recover from the pain from the last class the next class will begin. The price to pay for good health and a decent figure to go with it, Priceless. I am willing to pay for it. Stay tune for our next Kick....class.

If you are anything like me, I consider makeup war paint. Either it is overly done or not done up enough.

For women of color it becomes a greater challenge to find shades that compliment our skin tones, skin types and lifestyle. So how does one go about getting your needs met? Hire a makeup artist and have them at your beckon call. Unless you are Beyonce, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Angelina Jolie that's not even an option. Be the Quintessential Blushing Bride

It is difficult to argue that there is nothing more beautiful on a wedding day than a vibrant, fresh-faced bride…a woman who looks like herself, but at her very best, on one of the most important days of her life.

With the wide array of products available today, the look can be achieved quickly and easily.
There is no need to slather a face in foundation and cover up the natural beauty of your skin. Tarte offers a fabulous concealer called “The Eraser.” It’s packaged in a fabulous pen which is so easy to use. All you have to do is twist the bottom and the smooth, concealing cream is dispensed through a soft brush that makes application clean and tidy, without the mess of having to blend it in with your fingers. It’s very easy to control for a flawless finish. To follow up the concealer, all I would recommend would be the “T-Zone Travel” compact from Tarte. It’s an invisible shine control powder that is suitable for all shades of skin. It’s light and won’t cake up. The compact is a gorgeous little number which houses the pressed powder, a fabulous flat brush for application and a pack of blotting sheets for quick touch-ups.

For the lovely “blushing” part of the look, I highly recommend any of the cheek stains by Tarte. My favorite cheek stain is the new “Natural Cheek Stain.” It’s a new twist on Tarte’s most popular product. The cheek stain is packed with natural ingredients to keep your skin radiant and is paraben free, phthalate free, mineral oil free, propylene glycol free, sulfate free and is dermatologist tested. It is naturally fragranced with cassis and gives your cheeks and lips a gorgeous sheer berry stain. The color is much easier to control than other lip and cheek stains since it’s in stick form and not liquid. And don’t forget to truly look flushed, just put color on the apples of your cheeks…where you would naturally blush.

You don’t have to work hard to have fabulous eyes on your wedding day. I found some gorgeous products to use from Urban Decay that will help emphasize, but not over emphasize, your natural beauty. First, start off with the “24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil” in “Yeyo.” This shade is a subtle, pearly white which will help make your eyes look whiter and brighter. All you have to do is line the inside part of your bottom lid. I recommend doing this first so it can wear some and look completely natural by the time you are finished with your eyes. From there apply their “Sellout” eye shadow onto your brow bone, just under your eyebrow, from the arch to the outer edge. A matte shadow like “Shakedown” is perfect for applying to your entire lid. Follow up with the “Bourbon” eye pencil at your lash line, then blend the line with “Secret Service” matte shadow. Last but not least, finish off with the “Big Fatty Mascara” for lush lashes!

When it comes to your lips…keep it simple. Plan to wear a color that is natural enough to not be noticeable if it wears off some. In my 16 years as a make-up artist, I have yet to find a long-lasting lipstick that really knocks my socks off. So, I opt for soft and natural. I really like tinted lip balms. They usually have such a natural hint of color they can be applied without a mirror. I am a big fan of Tarte’s “24-7” tinted lip balms, which also have an SPF of 15. “Champagne Brunch” is a very pretty natural color that could be worn by anyone. If you want that extra touch of sparkle and shine, put a layer of Too Faced’s super-shiny “Diamond Gloss” in “White” on top of the lip balm.

09 Bonnie and Clyde- Diffuse The Situation......

So Tuesday evening this week was spent with a bridesmaid putting together our guest favors. We are sending guests away with home oil reed diffusers in a Cherry blossom scent. They had to be tied with Black satin ribbon and bottled. Kamey and I got through about 80 of them, which left another 70 for another night and another bridesmaid. We ordered expensive Chinese (Yes, there is a difference between chicken with broccoli and steamed sea bass with ginger sauce and steamed broccoli- it’s price). We stayed away from wine as I didn’t want crooked bows and oil spills.

Wondering why I didn’t just BUY reed diffusers? Because, I’m busy being a reccesionista! Making the diffusers saved me like $1000. Hello!

The fiancé came home from a trip to Miami and helped “supervise.” Don’t you love how disconnected men are to the wedding planning? The only time they show any interest is when Mom or Aunty calls about the guest list! Their other job is to cut a check and show up. *sigh*

Next on the list: finish guest favors, arrange a trip to shop for bridesmaid jewelry, book a dj (finally) and approve the bachelorette evite. A bride’s work is never done…

09 Bonnie And Clyde-Scoping The Joint-The Saga Continues

So, yesterday, I had plans to meet with Ms. Mara Newman for my first “walk through” at High Bar. Mara knows everyone in the city and is the sole reason I’m having my wedding at Highbar. I met Mara through one of the former directors at Ford (Kamla Butler- a bridesmaid). Mara’s booked events for Ford over the past few years and I heard she is the best person to know in NYC on the Party. When I first met Mara, she was rockin’ a head full of curly hair, a nameplate chain and fur trim coat. She was boisterous and demanding- I LOVED IT. She showed me some amazing spaces like Aspen Social, Amalia and HighBar and worked out a great deal with the owners. I owe her my firstborn.

No…Really.

So Mara couldn’t make it at the last minute because of another event she was executing. Live events are tricky business!

Anyway, Thank God I brought along Mrs. Elizabeth Kamp and her model hubby Nathan Kamp (and my fiancé) to help bounce ideas off them. Where do we put the tables? What should be draped? Where are the candles? (Elizabeth and Nathan have a show called Nathan Lives To Eat. www.nathanlivestoeat.com.) Elizabeth is naturally REALLY good at décor and design and has taken pity on me and has been helping me pull together ideas. They are most beautiful couple ever! Inside and out, I swear there is a special place in heaven for those two.

It took a couple hours but we figured out what was needed to rent tables and chairs etc. but I’m worried that we won’t have seating for everyone but I refuse to stress! The space is set up like a lounge and not for a sit down dinner. Where’s Grandma going to sit and eat her steak? Indian-style in a bali bed? I don’t think so. ARGH! Sounds like I need an interior designer and THAT sounds expensive. The saga continues…

Today I had the honor, privilege of meeting and working with Victoria Rowell, who will grace us with her presence for our Fall/Winter 2009 Cover. This extra-ordinary spirit is bigger then life. She exudes, confidence, grace and elegance. If I may add in a pair of Timberland boots and Baby Phat Jeans, tapered fitting black shirt, gorgeous cashmere riding jacket, and a Kangol plaid hat. Can you dig it? And looking more fabulous them women half her age... Hush your mouth.
This lady of style that was raised in the foster system of America managed to become the American dream, an inspiration to children, women and especially women of color.
Ms. Victoria Rowell greeted me at the door of British born designer Jane Wilson Marquis in her New York City boutique as though we were friends for years. Her spirit and warmth not only made me feel at ease but compelled me to want to serve her and grant her wedding dream. Our long day was carefully orchestrated by her personal assistant Manuella, who for the past three weeks has been communicating with me via email about Victoria's heavy work schedule. Promoting her book "The Women That Raised Me", New York Times best sellers list; planning a charity event for her non-for-profit organization, Rowell Foster Children Positive Plan, which provides scholarships in the arts and education to foster youth, and serves as a national spokesperson for the Annie E. Casey Foundation/Casey Family Services (please support by making donations, www.rfcpp.org). Putting the finishing touches on her soon to be released book "Secrets of A Soap Opera Diva", acting, and planning a June wedding. Wow! Yes, and she is a mom, a philanthropist, a humanitarian and a motivational speaker.
After you get your head wrapped around all that, let's run in to the Carlyle Hotel, which adjacent to the boutique and have a spot of tea as we await for her Victoria's niece and briefly discuss the remainder of the day. The Carlyle Hotel has a special place in my heart because it was there that I once had the honor of serving the late Ertha Kitt, who regularly performed there.
So as this journey continues we go to our second appointment to my favorite hot spot Bernardaud where Ms. Rowell did her bridal registry. Exquisite is all I can say. After a two hour tour and planning a lovely tea reception for fifty of her closest family, friends, mentors, and supporters. We were off to meet with the ever so fabulous B Michael, the original milliner, who designed the most fabulous hats for Dynasty. Yes I said Dynasty. For those who are new to the school of Divatude please "google him".
B Michael! Mr. B Michael who has dressed the likes of Sicily Tyson, Cate Blanchett, Beyonce, Halle Berry, Elizabeth Alexander and Susan Fales Hills to name a few will be not only dressing Rowell for her appearance for the remainder of her book tour and media appearances, as well as donating hats and a gown to be auctioned at Victoria's famous High Tea Fund Raising event in Los Angeles Sponsored by Carnival Cruise Line on their ship. Now that is class. He will be making the attire of Radcliffe Bailey, painter artist, and fiance of Ms. Victoria Rowell.
We grab a few bites to eat while we fit for Radcliffe's attire. His spirit and body framed so reminded me of my favorite actor, musician, Sammy Davis Jr., his shy, soft, and passive spirit warmed my heart. What an amazing sense of style.
We quickly make our exits and catch a cab and run to our next appointment near Gramercy Park to discuss shooting the cover of next issue in the amazing Island of Guana Island. My name is Latoya Scott, I’m getting married in about 8 weeks and ‘behind the 8 ball’ doesn’t even describe how behind I am in planning. I need a florist, dj, décor, hair, jewelry, hotel rooms and my bridesmaid dresses are JUST getting made! Mantra: I must remain calm or they will call me “Brideszilla.”

Khari Seph, a young designer who’s portfolio reads from Beyonce to magazines to his own clothing line Celebutante (sold in boutiques such as Scoop and Kitson) is leading the Bridesmaids effort with dresses from his spring line. Each dress is custom made to fit each girl’s contours and we set it up so that the girls would pick their own dress and we make changes to the straps/shape/color to make it hers. The dresses are short and sexy and BLACK with very subtle cream/ivory details. No better dress than a LBD! They have just gone to production and I’m crossing fingers and toes that all nine can get done in the next month with fittings and fabric that make it perfection. My goal: that the girls not lie to me…They WILL wear it again!

Next on the ‘To Do’ jewelry to compliment the dresses but not show them up. *Sigh* A bride’s work is never done.

If you’re wondering WHY I waited until the 11th hour…I really didn’t. I was supposed to have a beautiful wedding at a 5-star hotel on a massive terrace over-looking the Caribbean Sea in the Dominican Republic with 150-300 seriously inebriated guests. The resort screwed me out of my deposit and plans went south. Next thing I knew, I was starting from scratch trying to pull off a NYC wedding in 5 months with half the guest list. Needless to say, there are a lot of folks that are mad that they aren’t invited and with a hectic career I had no time to visit the 15,000 possible venues and churches. Therefore it took some time to figure out and I’m keeping my cool with all of the aunt-cousin-sister-brother-friends that come out of the wood work expecting an invitation even though they haven’t spoken to us or hung with us during our entire relationship. Can’t they just be happy with a marriage announcement and photo? Clearly not.

Race To The Alter-Real Bride Nana Eyeson

Hey Ladies,

My name is Nana Eyeson and I am the newest member of The World Bride family. As contributing editor and a fellow bride to be--JULY 18, 2009 to be exact! I've been asked to take you ladies along with me on my journey to the alter.. Girls its no joke :) But its WORTH IT!

I like most of you have found the man of my dreams, he proposed, I said yes actually I repeated "is that for me" over and over until a passerby shouted "yes its for you" But I digress. And though we initially thought an intimate wedding in Jamaica would be attainable ... we quickly realized that as two children of crazy "African" parents that was not an option. Africans don't do anything intimate :) I mean heck my mother is one of 14, so you get the idea.

So here we go... 250+ guest later, and 110 days to go the process has began!

As for the inspiration to my madness, its been a bit hard to explain. As I want regal, classic black tie elegance with a chic African twist. And that can sometimes get confused for "Coming to America" and though it was one of my favorite movies not so much for my wedding.

However, the colors were easy to decide on as, my favorite color of all time is Purple... So we are doing a deep purple & cream, with hints of chocolate brown and gold.

So ladies that's what I have so far... please let me know your thoughts!

I must be extremely honest with you, I did not go see this in the movies because I thought why? I can wait until it comes to cable. What a mistake this was a mistake.. This should have been a movie I went with my girlfriends and then we would've gone out to dinner to discuss.

Relationship, love, marriage, infidelity, sex, trust, honesty and the power of friendship. The true meaning of marriage. Is it about the wedding or the marriage? Who are we really doing it for?
